This watch is so cool and so advanced. First and foremost it boasts a 1/100th seconds chronograph. When activated, the 1/100th seconds chronograph hand makes 1 complete rotation around the dial each second. If you have never seen this watch in operation, the effect is mesmerizing or maybe more like hypnotizing.
Technically speaking and in simplified terms, this watch has 2-escapements and 2 separate power reserves. 1 for the watch and main timekeeping function, the other escapement is for the 1/100th seconds chronograph. There is a 50-hour 'Chrono Power Reserve' indicator at 12:00 which shows a 50 hour power reserve--this is exclusively for showing how much power is in chronograph function. Because there are 2 power reserves and 2 escapements this means the watch can maintain proper time even if the chronograph function is out of power and likewise if the chronograph function is charged, the chronograph will function perfectly even if the main watch has run out of power. The chronograph power reserve is wound or charged by turning the winding crown clockwise. This is the only way to charge the power reserve for the chronograph. Turning the winding crown counter-clockwise winds the movement (of course wearing the watch also winds the movement and charges the timekeeping power reserve). One interesting thing to note is that the Defy El Primero 21 is chronometer certified by TimeLab, so you can bet that both the 5 Hz escapement for the running timekeeping and the 50 Hz escapement for the chronograph will prove reliable and steady.
