Pink Gold Case with Engine-Turned Bezel and Textured Dial
Ivory ‘quadrante-guilloche’ Dial
honeycomb-textured dial complemented by applied pink gold (faceted) dart indexes. An outer minutes/seconds track and pink gold dauphine hands completes the look of sheer beauty. Simple, clean and uncluttered without a date indication, this watch screams elegance and simplicity.
Largest XL Bubbleback Case
This so-called XL Bubbleback Ref 6099 (with its pronounced and significantly larger 36mm case) was produced in 1958 as indicated by its 791xxx serial number. It re-set the standard for oversized classy dress watches at the time and still continued to turn heads!
Some refer to the engine turned bezel as a ‘Thunderbird’ bezel even though this bezel is fixed and does not rotate. Check out those hour indexes engraved 'en relief' by being literally carved out of the pink gold bezel. Ironically, the Thunderbirds Jet Team (for whom the Rolex Thunderbird model is aptly named after) didn’t exist at the time this watch was produced and yet this doesn’t seem to dissuade anyone from calling it that.
Call it what you want, the pink gold engine turned bezel has a subtlety and sublime beauty that combined with the ‘quadrante-guilloche’ dial and pink gold dauphine hands is hard to describe and impossible not to be smitten by.
