Vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona - Ref 6240 / Ser#1269501 (Circa 1966)
So called Small Daytona for the fact that the DAYTONA logo on dial is smaller and in a different position than DAYTONA logo on subsequent models
Also affectionately referred to as Big Eye Daytona, so called for its larger sub dials
Ref 6240 is first oyster-case and hence water-resistant Daytona reference - Oyster case = Water Resistant (interestingly, Rolex chose not to state this on dial--adds to rarity of this example)
original Mk0 "Mille Ligne'' screw down brass Pushers - Ultra rare to find examples of this watch with original brass Mille Ligne pushers
small DAYTONA logo placed just underneath ROLEX COSMOGRAPH logos and is featured in a smaller font
Daytona dial is missing Rolex's "Oyster" stamp despite the fact that this watch is water resistant as a by product of the Rolex Oyster case
Non Underlined 'T-Swiss-T' printing at 6 o'clock
Tritium plot over the word swiss is correct for a dial printed around the 1.2 million serial number (later printed dials, 'Swiss" is closer to the sub dial)
Original Rolex MK0 Bakelite Tachymeter bezel (installed on watch as pictured) - also comes with replacement Mk1 Bakelite Bezel (not on watch)
Original full length Rolex 7205 Oyster Riveted bracelet with 57 endlinks and original Rolex clasp stamp 66/4 (Year/quarter).
37mm stainless steel case, Full References and Serial Numbers (Ref 6240 and Serial #1269501) are full legible with naked eye
Inside of Caseback stamped 6239 -C.R.S 1
The Story Behind This Rolex 6240
The Rolex 6240 is among the rarest Daytona references ever produced. Rarer than 6239 and 6263, the 6240 was the first Daytona to use an Oyster case. This watch is truly the heritage inspiration for the current Daytona (116500) with a Panda-style (light colored dial with dark contrasting sub-dials) and a black bakelite Mk0 bezel insert. The rarity of this example continues with the original Mk0 "mille ligne" pushers, with straight, engraved vertical lines for additional grip when turning. These differ significantly from the current models which feature fluted pushers similar to the crown. It also includes its original Rolex Oyster bracelet, which is simply rare because of how the bracelets were constructed during those days. Most examples of this watch did not survive with both the original pushers and the original MK0 bezel, so act now if you want to own this amazing piece of Rolex Daytona history!
