Origins of the Doxa Poseidon Watch
Doxa is most known for 3 versions of their professional Divers’ watches: their Signature Orange Dial "Professional," for which the company is most famous, the black-dial "Sharkhunter", and the silver-dial "Searambler". In the early 1970s, Doxa made a version of the SUB 300T ("T" designation was added in 1968 to denote the use of tritium) with a bright yellow dial, calling it the Divingstar. These were produced in very limited quantities. Doxa released an even more limited edition Divingstar co-branded with Swedish Diving Equipment Company, Poseidon featuring their black and yellow trident badge on the dial. To find an original vintage Divingstar is rare, but to find an original Divingstar Poseidon is like finding a unicorn tear.
Poseidon is a Swiss Diving Equipment company founded in 1958. Best known for producing the first single-hose regulator and some of the most reliable cold water diving gear. The fact that Doxa co-branded with Poseidon may seem odd today but back then, Doxas were sold in greater quantities through dive shops (than watch/jewelry stores) and were so purpose-built for diving that they were frequently purchased as necessary diving gear and less like a piece of jewelry.
Features/Specifications of Doxa Divingstar Poseidon Special Limited Edition:
Signature Doxa 'beads of rice' stainless steel divers’ bracelet with fold over clasp and integrated diving extension
Significance of the YELLOW Dial
While Doxa is best known for its orange-dial divers, orange is actually a color that turns to grey upon descent into the sea, since water filters out red wavelengths at around 15 feet of depth. Yellow and blue are visible to much greater depths, so the Poseidon would still look yellow well past 100 feet. The Poseidon co-branding might be lost on a lot of non-divers , but for those faithful to their Poseidon diving gear, or collectors who don’t stand a chance of finding one of the originals, this one feels just right!
