the founder of Breguet, Abraham Louis Breguet is the inventor of the tourbillon complication. As such, Breguet takes their Tourbillon watches very seriously. This Breguet Tourbillon Messidor reference # 5335BR/42/9W6 exemplifies that point.
The Breguet Tourbillon Messidor was named after '7 Messidor', year IX of the French revolutionary calendar which coincides with the date the tourbillon complication was patented by AL Breguet.
The most distinguishing feature of the 5335 is its openworked skeleton dial and tourbillon at 6:00. The focal point of the watch is the almost floating 'flying tourbillon' mechanism sandwiched between two sapphire crystals. The end result is what looks like an optical illusion where the Tourbillon is just suspended in its own bubble seeming to float inside the case.
One quick glance at this watch and you can see the highest caliber of fine hand finishing on every visible component of the movement. This includes selective combinations of linear and radial brushed finishes, hints of perlage, chamfering (aka anglage en francais) which serve to highlight the shape of each component with a smooth high polished beveled edge.
Signature Breguet blued steel hands stand out nicely over the skeleton dial. It's a nice contrast from the steel and gold accents and serves to make this watch extremely easy to ready, even with all that transparency. Interestingly, the shortened minute hand (still longer than the hour hand) somehow passes through the tourbillon window without obstructing the view of the tourbillon.
The Breguet Tourbillon Messidor 5335BR reviewed here is powered by the in-house Breguet caliber 558 SQ2 boasting a 51-hour power reserve. This is a manual wind/hand-wound watch. The absence of a winding rotor allows for an extremely thin profile of a mere 9.65mm case thickness.
This watch has never been on a wrist and still has original factory plastics, hang tags and stickers.
